Wearing Medical Alerts

Getting a "Medical Alert" tag may not seem that important, but it is something that could truly save your life.

First I want to start by saying that this is NOT some kind of lame advertising. Like everything on the site, it all comes straight from my heart, and is something I personally feel is very important.

"Medical Alert" tags are those bracelets, necklaces, keyrings, watches, and clothing tags (whatever you choose) that relay important medical information about you to the medical community. They can be imprinted with just about any medical information you want, or with an identification number and phone number to reference your medical information. I feel they are something any person suffering with an Eating Disorder can wear and should consider wearing.

Victims suffering (or in recovery for) Anorexia, Bulimia, and/or Compulsive Overeating can be faced with a number of physical dangers, including many which would render them unable to communicate with medical staff. There are also many of you out there suffering that have not told anyone in your immediate family, or otherwise, of your Eating Disorder. This would leave them in the position to also not be able to communicate with the doctors and nurses in a hospital with 100% accuracy. There are times when family doctors are not aware of the Eating Disorder and it is not in medical records, making this a deadly secret from the people who need to be able to try and help in an emergency, whether caused by a complication due to the Eating Disorder or not.

Your "Medical Alert" ID will let the medical staff know of any relevant information. You could have it imprinted with:

  • An Identification Number and phone number that references your medical information (from MedicAlert)

    or with specific medical information such as:

  • Anorexic (and/or) Bulimic;
  • in recovery for Anorexia (and/or) Bulimia;
  • Compulsive Overeating (and/or) Binge Eating Disorder Victim

    and

  • Any medications you are currently prescribed to take;
  • Any allergies you have to medications;
  • Any other physical medical conditions you suffer from;
  • Any other psychological conditions you suffer from (such as Multiple Personality Disorder or Clinical Depression);
  • Phone number for emergency contact

You can choose the type (MedicAlert) that uses an identification number and phone number, or you can choose to where a custom ID tag. You can choose to have your name on it or not. Within size limits to the type of medical alert ID tag you choose, you can include as much or as little information as you like. Here's three examples:

Different medical alert companies have different procedures (below there will be a list of links for you to follow), but generally you have a lot of choices to the ID tag you want and what information will go on them. They are generally NOT expensive. Some companies offer them plain on one side, some you can have the choice whether or not the "medical alert" symbol appears on the front or back, or at all, and you have a good choice of the kind of tag you'd like.

I feel it is very important to get a "Medical Alert" tag, and to get one as soon as you can. If you have to think about it for a while than bookmark this page. If you are wondering "well, do YOU have one?" -- as a matter of fact, yes, I do.
