March 14th, 1997

After suffering from anorexia and bulimia for fourteen years, I finally feel liberated from the depths of despair. If it wasn't for my husband I probably never would have had the opportunity to heal. He loves me no matter what I look like and no matter what state of mind I am in.

For two and a half months in 1996, I spent my last stint in an outpatient hospital program, and learned to live with myself while taking care of my needs at the same time. I still struggle with ingrained thoughts and behaviours, but my weight has held for a year now. The big motivators have been;

  1. faith in Jesus - he loves me despite the fact I've been sick for so long
  2. getting really, really angry at the disease
  3. pretending I'm my own parent
  4. letting myself be creative and thereby allowing me to be ME
  5. being creative to take care of myself and cope
  6. going to therapy with and Expressive arts therapist and also a Christian psychologist.

Two approaches was the answer this time around.

It's a tough road to recovery, but it's sometimes helpful to think of gaining health as a big experiment. It's easy to go back, if you want to. But it's a lot better on the way DOWN the hill than constantly fighting and chastising oneself and trying to make it to the TOP of Recovery Mountain.

May you have peace in your heart and soul.
