Words of Encouragement

I do a great deal of volunteer work surrounding eating disorders and educating others on body image and self esteem. From my own experience with an eating disorder and from the experience I have gained through volunteer work I have the following to stress:

a) Admitting that you have an eating disorder and that you need help, takes a tremendous amount of courage. If you have done this already I applaude you!! I believe that it is expecially hard for those suffering from an eating disorder to admit to needing help because they often are so independent and focused on being in control.

b) The process of recovery is up and down. There will be days when things are going well and you think that everything is going to be o.k. anfd then you will take 5 steps backward. It is frusrtating and it's important to remember how far you have already come. I also believe it is imporatant to stress to your peers and family members that recovery is a long and bumpy road, so that can be supportive along the way.

c) Find someone you can open up to, that you can talk to. Freinds are instrumental in recovery. But remember that as a friend you can only do so much you are not a doctor or a therapist. Also remember to take care of yourself, being a "friend" can be very stressful.

d) For me I found putting my energy into becoming not only well but strong very helpful. After spending days in bed unable to climb a set of stairs without becoming dizzy, I found it very rewarding to "nourish" my self so that I could enjoy a run or walk outside....

e) Remember that you did not wish this upon yourself, that you are not guilty, that you have not purposely done this to destroy your family....

f) There is light at the end of the tunnel. As horrible as my experience with anorexia and bulimia were, I would not trade those experiences, for they have made me a much stronger and insightful person, my parents have become my best freinds, and I have realized that there is alot I can do to help end this suffering in other people.
