Lana Areton, MA, MFT Intern
As a compulsive overeater I experienced great pain, anxiety and disillusionment around the way I ate. I was on a constant mission to gain control over my thoughts, feelings and behaviors around food and my body. I often tried to eat the way others ate, eat healthfully, and change my habits. But, inevitably I would give up and return to old patterns of eating and behaving that were hurtful and damaging. This downward cycle led me into deeper and deeper hopelessness and despair about myself. I was filled with self-hatred, shame and embarrassment.
Fortunately, the pain led me to a new place of hope and I became willing to try a new approach to heal the obsession with my weight and food. I called a therapist for help and support. I spoke honestly to her about the food I ate and the impact it was having on life. Through her guidance I learned to become aware of my feelings, practice self-love, and make choices about food and body that reflected my highest values. Through the therapy process I learned to transform my relationship to food, body, family, friends, workmy whole life.
As a result of this self-work, the food and body obsession diminished drastically. I experienced improved connections with my family, friends and relationships. I found a satisfying and fulfilling career. I developed a richer and fuller spiritual and creative life. I am gratefully maintaining a 50-lbs weight loss. But most importantly I discovered a deeper relationship with myself.
If you are interested in discovering yourself, trying a new approach to healing your relationship to food, or living a fuller life, I invite you to call me for an appointment. As a therapist I offer an approach that is individually tailored to assist each client to reach their highest potential and become their best selves. I gently guide clients to connect to feelings from the past and experience them in the present for healing of issues and traumas. I offer support and hope that freedom from food, body and life obsession is possible and a reality for everyone.

In her Berkeley private practice, she currently specialize in treating eating disorders, trauma survivors, and working with couples and families. Patients describe her as gentle and compassionate in a strong way, tempered by an easy sense of humor. She helps you become more conscious, and offers support and advocacy as you learn to live with greater awareness of yourself and the world. She stays clear and focused so you can better access your inner strength and wisdom. She says, "In focussing on your eating disorder, you may choose to include journal, art, or movement work, and guided fantasies to help you express what the eating problem has been trying to say. Ultimately, you will learn to eat when you are
hungry and stop when you are full. But in the meantime, when you cannot always do this, we will use the symptoms to point us to the triggers and issues in your life that you have been using bingeing, starving, and/or purging to solve. We work these through one by one, until you feel stronger to face these difficulties without depriving or punishing yourself with food."

Self Knowledge -- "Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights. But your ears thirst for the sound of your hearts' knowledge. You would know in words that which you have always known in thought. You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dream. And it is well you should. The hidden well spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea." -- Kahil Gibran, The Prophet
Although the Prophet says "you must know in words that which you have always known in thought" people who suffer from eating disorders need to be able to find "the hidden wellspring of their soul" underneath the bingeing, purging, starving, and dread of gaining weight. Our work together is the quest for self knowledge and the uncovering of faulty thinking (e.g. if I'm thinner, I'll be happy in every way), along with the battle to be freed form the tyranny of dieting and body hatred. Self knowledge and emotional knowledge are powerful, sometimes scary forces. That is why it is important to go slowly and hang on, even if therapy feels like the last thing you want to be doing. I believe that creativity has a strong power to heal, and I use writing as a healing tool with groups and individuals.

Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program At Wright Institute Los Angeles
This program is designed to achieve long lasting results by treating eating disorders as symptomatic of significant and deeply-held feelings. Featuring low-cost outpatient individualized treatment, it is the only program of its kind in the region.
The program begins with a comprehensive assessment that ascertains how the disordered eating pattern fits into the person's life and what purpose(s) it is serving. Food and eating patterns frequently reflect the expression of unmet needs. Feelings often masked by these diseases include anger, shame, deprivation, lack of trust, and insecure attachment. The eating pattern may be used as an attempt at soothing or numbing oneself from these feelings or providing the illusion of control. Following this evaluation, a sturctured program will be develped based on individual needs.

Eating Disorder Center of California
The Eating Disorder Center of California (EDCC) provides a supportive environment with all the necessary components to help eating disorder clients cope with the underlying issues, current stressors, and biochemical factors that cause them to binge, purge, starve, and/or compulsively exercise. We utilize a multi-disciplinary treatment approach in order to address all aspects related to an eating disorder: medical, nutritional, psychological, biochemical and behavioral.
Our day treatment program, meets Monday through Friday, 11am - 7pm, providing clients with the necessary skills needed to implement and maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
Through comprehensive assessment and with feedback from clients and significant others, we develop an individualized treatment plan.
Individualized treatment is an essential part of the program. Each client is assigned an individual therapist who they will meet with twice a week for individual and/or family therapy. Each client also meets with our psychiatrist and dietician for initial assessments and on-going weekly consultations. Our physician makes weekly on-site rounds to attend to any medical issues. If a client wishes to continue sessions with an outside therapist or psychiatrist, arrangements for this will be made through the clinical director. Our daily schedule includes a variety of group therapies and activities. Attention is directed toward creating a therapeutic milieu enabling clients to support each other in appropriate ways. Using psychodynamic, educational, cognitive-behavioral, and expressive group therapy formats, clients gain insight into their underlying eating disorder issues and interpersonal skill necessary for true and lasting recovery.

Constantly thinking about food, weight, eating, exercise, and body image can be enormously draining, time consuming, and painful. In addition, feeling that you have to face these issues by yourself is overwhelming. It may be hard to imagine that you can stop obsessing in this way, yet with help, it's absolutely possible.
I am a clinical psychologist in private practice and am passionate about these issues. Helping people achieve a comfortable relationship with food, their bodies, and themselves so they have energy for everything else that matters is what I love doing. My style of therapy is interactive and compassionate, and integrates a variety of approaches to address the symptoms and the underlying roots of the problem. In my private practice I work almost exclusively with individuals struggling with an eating disorder. My work is very individualized and depends on each individual's unique situation and goals. Many of my clients are not yet ready to "give up" their eating disorder. Together we work to heal their relationship with food allowing for a more authentic and spontaneous relationship with oneself and the world at large. Likewise, I believe an effective treatment approach needs to include mind, body, and spirit.
In addition to my work in private practice, I'm on staff at an eating disorder treatment center. I welcome anyone to contact me with any questions. -- Warmly, Michelle

I'm a licensed therapist who has been specializing in eating disorders for 9 years. I believe with the proper treatment full recovery from an eating disorder is possible. I have experienced this both professionally and personally (I've been recovered from my eating disorder for 12 years now). I work with the philosophy that healing is needed on a mind, body and soul level.
My professional experience with eating disorders includes inpatient programs (hospital and residential), outpatient programs, facilitating ANAD groups, individual psychotherapy and public speaking on education/prevention.
I have offices in Agoura Hills and Westwood where I offer individual, couple and family therapy.

ANAD Support Group
An eating problem does not want you to see that you are more powerful than the problem...but you are. Any problem gains more power when a person is in isolation. Supportive community then is one answer to reclaiming a life affected by disordered eating.
This is a self-help support group that meets on Monday Nights from 6-7:15 p.m. and is facilitated by an MFT Intern.
This group is open and free to anyone struggling to recover and heal from an eating disorder.
Over time we have been able to create a judgment-free context for the safe exploration of the effects of:
Come join us for conversation to re-member who you are outside the influence of the problem.

Bonnie Y. Modugno, MS, RD
Bonnie Modugno is a nutrition consultant specializing in weight management and sports nutrition. I have been in practice 15 years, working with clients along the spectrum of disordered eating. I see myself as a facillitator, helping clients to allow food to take its rightful place in their lives. Learning how to eat is an important part of making peace with food and giving yourself the opportunity to learn more effective strategies to manage the challenges in life. When it comes to food and physiology I have found that working with our body is not necessarily easier, but alot more effective and joyful than fighting against it.
