Judy Lightstone has been providing psychotherapy for the past 18 years and training professional therapists for the past 16 years. In her Berkeley private practice, she currently specialize in treating eating disorders, trauma survivors, and working with couples and families. Patients describe her as gentle and compassionate in a strong way, tempered by an easy sense of humor. She helps you become more conscious, and offers support and advocacy as you learn to live with greater awareness of yourself and the world. She stays clear and focused so you can better access your inner strength and wisdom. She says, "In focussing on your eating disorder, you may choose to include journal, art, or movement work, and guided fantasies to help you express what the eating problem has been trying to say. Ultimately, you will learn to eat when you are
hungry and stop when you are full. But in the meantime, when you cannot always do this, we will use the symptoms to point us to the triggers and issues in your life that you have been using bingeing, starving, and/or purging to solve. We work these through one by one, until you feel stronger to face these difficulties without depriving or punishing yourself with food."

I will assist the individual in terms of referrals to internists, nutritionists, and psychiatrists (trained in the treatment of eating disorders) as a necessary adjunct to psychotherapy. Individual psychotherapy will involve an integration of cognitive behavioral therapy ( including self-monitoring, challenging cognitive distortions, increasing coping skills, psychoeducation (involving educating the client regarding the medical and psychological consequences of eating disorders, distilling myths around weight and food, and developing a healthy lifestyle to prevent relapse, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (focused on developing skills related to affect regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal functioning), and Relapse Prevention (focused on increasing awarenenss of warning signs and the ability to self-manage these triggers as well as increasing tolerance for relapse behaviors. My work is based on establishing a relationship with the client that is defined by safety and trust and mutual respect.

Phyllis Klein, LCSW
Self Knowledge -- "Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights. But your ears thirst for the sound of your hearts' knowledge. You would know in words that which you have always known in thought. You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dream. And it is well you should. The hidden well spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea." -- Kahil Gibran, The Prophet
Although the Prophet says "you must know in words that which you have always known in thought" people who suffer from eating disorders need to be able to find "the hidden wellspring of their soul" underneath the bingeing, purging, starving, and dread of gaining weight. Our work together is the quest for self knowledge and the uncovering of faulty thinking (e.g. if I'm thinner, I'll be happy in every way), along with the battle to be freed form the tyranny of dieting and body hatred. Self knowledge and emotional knowledge are powerful, sometimes scary forces. That is why it is important to go slowly and hang on, even if therapy feels like the last thing you want to be doing. I believe that creativity has a strong power to heal, and I use writing as a healing tool with groups and individuals.

Constantly thinking about food, weight, eating, exercise, and body image can be enormously draining, time consuming, and painful. In addition, feeling that you have to face these issues by yourself is overwhelming. It may be hard to imagine that you can stop obsessing in this way, yet with help, it's absolutely possible.
I am a clinical psychologist in private practice and am passionate about these issues. Helping people achieve a comfortable relationship with food, their bodies, and themselves so they have energy for everything else that matters is what I love doing. My style of therapy is interactive and compassionate, and integrates a variety of approaches to address the symptoms and the underlying roots of the problem. I treat anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating, and see individuals, couples, families, and adolescents.

Eating and body image problems sometimes express our deepest
expieriences as women. Our issues of staying true to our genuine hunger/s, defining
ourselves in and not in relationship to others, and taking up space in a
sometimes dangerous world may show up in our relationships to food
and body. I have been helping women work through these issues since 1984,
when I received my post-graduate training at
the Women's Therapy Centre Institute (founded by Susie Orbach).
Since 1986 I have trained and provided consultation
for many therapists who wanted to learn this orientation.
My approach to the work is interactive and compassion, using my strength
and an easy sense of humor.
