Dr. Stephen Stotland, Ph.D.
I have worked with individuals with eating disorders for the past 15 years. This includes people with anorexia, bulimia, compulsive eating and obesity.
Treatment may or may not include other family members. We work on gradually modifying eating behavior, body image, dieting attitudes, and general self-esteem.
I have found that treatment is rarely short-term - although some patients show rapid improvement in their symptoms, for many the progress is slow and gradual. In some cases I find it necessary to refer patients to in-hospital or day-treatment programs, for the extra structure that they provide.
Many patients, however, do respond to outpatient treatment. Finally, I would like to say that eating disorders suffering, while they come in all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds, are some of the most interesting people that I've had the privilege to meet. Recovering from an eating disorder is
regaining freedom, and it has been great to witness this.
