from the EDAP Website:

Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) is Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention's national outreach campaign. During this week each February EDAP provides the opportunity for eating disorders organizations, mental health professionals, families, and concerned individuals around the world to join together to distribute information and organize awareness and prevention events.

Last year, the Week was organized by over 600 Coordinators and celebrated in all 50 states and 6 countries. EDAW events were planned in over 1000 K-12 schools, colleges, hospitals, and communities, generating media coverage that reached millions! Some of these events included workshops, conferences, public forums, film nights on college campuses, radio shows, hospital outreach programs, presentations, panel discussions, and many other innovative educational activities.

The key to eating disorders prevention is identifying and changing the conditions which promote the three D's: body dissatisfaction, dieting, and drive for thinness. Cultural norms that value people on the basis of physical appearance, the glorification of thinness, and a narrowly defined concept of beauty have helped to create a culture in which millions of individuals spend their lives obsessed with dieting rather than with living. Over the years, EDAW Coordinators have made great strides in educating the public about the dangers of dieting and the importance of focusing on balance rather than restriction.

During EDAW 2002, Coordinators will emphasize the importance of honoring one's natural hunger with the theme, "Listen To Your Body!"
